2017 marks the 100th anniversary of the US entering World War I (April 6, 1917).  Have you ever wondered what life in Falls Church was like back then?

  • Many homes in our Little City did not have indoor plumbing or running water and there were shortages of food and home heating coal.
  • Women still could not vote!
  • Fashions were rapidly changing—gone were ladies bustles and corsets.
  • Many men from our Little City went off to war and many did not return.

But Falls Church was a vibrant place to live and Fairfax County’s largest, most modern and advanced town.  Stop by historic Cherry Hill Farm House and meet the couple who lived there 100 years ago.  Judge Joseph Riley and his lovely wife Mary Edwards Riley are getting ready for New Year’s Eve 1917, but will gladly stop and chat.

Meet the Riley’s friends and family who drop by to visit and sing some songs while the men discuss current events.  Join the women to see what toys the grandchildren got for Xmas.  While you’re there, make sure to ask Judge Riley how he likes the taste of “Victory Bread”.  And have a good time 1917 style!
